Description
Klucel-G (Hydroxypropyl Cellulose) – Premium Conservation Grade Adhesive & Consolidant
Klucel-G is a highly versatile, non-ionic cellulose ether widely recognized as an industry-standard adhesive, consolidant, and sizing agent in fine art, book, and paper conservation. Characterized by its unique solubility profile and exceptional aging stability, Klucel-G dries into an incredibly flexible, clear, and non-tacky film without requiring added plasticizers.
Unlike many standard water-soluble polymers, Klucel-G easily dissolves in both water and polar organic solvents—such as isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, and acetone. This makes it an invaluable tool for treated materials that are highly sensitive to moisture.
Key Features & Applications
- Leather Consolidation & Red Rot Treatment: Widely applied as an alcohol-based gel to stabilize powdery, deteriorating leather affected by red rot without darkening or staining the substrate.
- Paper & Book Conservation: Acts as an excellent sizing agent, paper consolidant, and adhesive for reinforcing fragile pages or creating solvent-reactivated repair tissues.
- Paint & Media Fixative: Used at low concentrations (typically 1–3%) to fix friable pigments, pastels, or flaking paint layers without altering visual aesthetics.
- Reversible & Archival: Completely reversible in water or alcohol after drying, aligning with strict modern museum conservation ethics.
- Safe Formulations: Highly surface-active with a neutral pH (5.0–8.5), minimizing chemical risks to historic artifacts.
